He is a professor and currently serves as the Director of  Graduate Studies at the UP School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP). He received his BS Architecture degree (cum laude) from the UP College of Architecture in Diliman, Quezon City. He earned his master’s and doctorate degree Science of Art and Design from the University of Tsukuba in Japan. While in Japan, Dr. Yap was involved in studies on prefabricated housing systems with the intention of developing a flexible industrialized housing (FIH) system for the Philippines. The basic concept of the FIH system is that a household will have different spatial needs as a family increases in size over the years. Thus, under the FIH model, the spaces of a house can be added or moved in accordance to the needs of a family incrementally in a modular way at low costs. Dr. Yap’s research interests include housing for low-income families, indigenous people settlements, land use and human settlements planning.
