DR. HUSSEIN SINSUAT LIDASAN

He was born on July 29, 1959. Upon finishing his Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1982 from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, he worked at the Transport Training Center (now the National Center for Transportation Studies) where his tasks focused primarily on Transportation Economics.  Dr. Lidasan obtained a Certificate in Development Economics in 1987 in the same university and then proceeded to Japan for his graduate studies. In 1991, he obtained a Master in Environmental Sciences at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, the University of Tsukuba in Japan and a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning in 1995 at the Institute of Planning and Policy Sciences also at the University of Tsukuba. Soon after obtaining his Ph.D., he returned to the University of the Philippines-Diliman and joined the School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) as a faculty member.  At present, he is a Full Professor.  

Dr. Lidasan is a native of Maguindanao and Cotabato City and has been active in the development endeavour in Mindanao, as well as other parts of the country.  He provided technical advice to the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) until 2019 and at times acts as resource person of the Inter-Agency Committee on Transport Planning (IACTP) of the NEDA.

Over the years, Dr. Lidasan served the university under various capacities: 

  • Dean, School of Urban and Regional Planning, February 2019 – January 2022.
  • Deputy Director, Office of Design and Planning Initiatives (ODPI), under the Office of the Vice President for Development, October 2013 – March 2017.
  • Deputy Chair, University of the Philippines – Manila Transport and Traffic Committee.
  • Director of Graduate Studies, School of Urban and Regional Planning, June 2012 – May 2016, April 1998 – May 1999.
  • Research and Extension Fellow, National Center for Transportation Studies, June 2012 – present.
  • College Secretary, School of Urban and Regional Planning, June – December 2005.
  • Director of Research and Publications, School of Urban and Regional Planning, April 2003 – May 2004.
  • Affiliate Associate Professor, National Center for Transportation Studies, June 1999 – December 2003.
  • Director, National Center for Transportation Studies, June 1999 – June 2002.
  • Transportation Assistant/Senior Training Assistant/Transportation Development Officer II, Transport Training Center (now the National Center for Transportation Studies), October 1982 – May 1995.

Dr. Lidasan’s research interest focus on transportation planning, intermodal logistics (including humanitarian logistics), travel demand analyses, subregional transport cooperation, transportation policy review, critical transport infrastructure (CTI) and climate change and transport. He has done several researches and publications in local and international journals.

He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Earthquake and Megacities Initiatives (EMI), an international non-profit environmental organization.  He is also a convenor of the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID). 

Dr. Lidasan is also lifetime member of the Transportation Science Society of the Philippines (TSSP) and the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Science (EASTS).
