Jem R. Javier is an assistant professor and the current chair of the Department of Linguistics, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman, where he earned his BA and MA degrees in linguistics. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in linguistics, Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia, and Literacy Training Service, and conducts research primarily on Philippine linguistics and culture studies, as well as on the interface between language and cognition.

Currently, Jem is involved in the UP Monolinggwal na Diksyonaryong Filipino [UP Monolingual Dictionary of Filipino] project, based on the digital text corpus of the contemporary use of Filipino, and the Dunong katutubo: Pagpapayaman ng kultura ng bayan sa pamamagitan ng katutubong wika sa Pilipinas [Indigenous knowledge: Enriching national culture through indigenous languages in the Philippines] project under the Philippine Cultural Education Program of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. He also serves as one of the consultants for the TalkTogether: Supporting oral language development, a collaborative research project headed by Assoc. Prof. Sonali Nag, PhD of the Department of Education at the University of Oxford.
