He fondly called “Rio” by friends and colleagues, is an Assistant Professor 7 at the Crop Breeding and Genetic Resources Division of Institute of Crop Science, College of Agriculture and Food Science of UPLB. He joined the University in 2016 after graduating magna cum laude from his Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture major in Plant Breeding. He then continued to pursue his masters’ degree in Plant Genetic Resources Conservation and Management (PGRCM) while continuing to do research in this area. To date, he has published 11 papers. One, in particular, was a paper on an objective method of shape descriptor state establishment using elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) in 2019. His current research interest is in conservation and management of Philippine medicinal plants, and was also involved in the documentation of indigenous vegetables in the Philippines.

At the University, he teaches basic courses in crop science and plant breeding, in addition to courses in plant genetic resources conservation and management.

Rio hails from the city of Cagayan de Oro, the progressive City of Smiles, in the Philippines’ largest island, Mindanao, in the south.
